On the site of ancient Carthage, one of the most powerful cities of its time, there lies today a region full of charm with a variety of riches. All along the coast of the exotic turquoise-tinted sea, which at times reminds you of a lagoon, there is a succession of smart little towns - La Marsa, Sidi Bou Said, Carthage and the newest Gammarth - these make up the elegant suburbs of the capital, orientated towards leisure activities and culture; modern with a flair for living.
The many ruins of Carthage are scattered across a wide area and a sense of history prevails as you take in events embracing the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans. Do visit the National Museum of Carthage, located on Byrsa Hill where Carthage was founded around 814 BC and puts the whole thing into perspective. A festival of concerts takes place in the amphitheatre of Carthage during the summer.
The Moorish cafes are welcoming and open on to sun-drenched terraces, the most famous of which are Cafe de Nattes in Sidi Bou Said, or the Cafe Saf-Saf in La Marsa, famous for its well, where a camel draws water. Stylish restaurants can be found in the whole area.
Of course you cannot miss an opportunity to visit the capital City of Tunis, but worth a visit is Bizerte, a large modern port with an attractive old town alongside the old port which is protected by serveral forts and citadels built over the centuries. Excursions from the Carthage Coast have to be arranged privately either through Tunisia First before you go or through your hotel.
Enjoy watersports on the beach including sailing, windsurfing, jet-ski and water-skiing plus there's a dive centre in the Port. Many of the hotels have tennis courts and close to the hotels is the 36-hole El Kantaoui Golf Course. There's an Aqua Park and a mini funfair for children. You can even go quad-biking. Several of the hotels in Port El Kantaoui have Thalassotherapy (spa centres) which provide an entire range of wellness treatments.
With nine championship golf courses enjoyed by professionals and amateurs alike, Tunisia is fast becoming a Mecca for golfers.
Affordable green fees, tuition, and equipment hire accompanied by value-for-money and luxurious accommodation makes Tunisia the best value in the Mediterranean for golfing holidays.
