This is an escorted small group tour of Tuscany and Umbria departing 11th May 2020, including 7 nights Half Board in Castel Rigone and five guided excursions. You'll be accompanied by Tony, our experienced in-house Italy specialist.
Discover an Italy that’s small-scale and artisan, local and seasonal. Wild boar, foraged truffles, Lake Trasimeno fish, and cured pork from Norcia are on the menu. Italians from all corners come to buy Umbrian majolica pottery and cashmere. Tourist crowds are almost unheard of in Umbria.
In May the region is full of wonderful scents and colours.
This fully escorted and ATOL-protected 7-night holiday (11th to 18th May 2020) is available from £1499 per person (based on two sharing a double/twin room). Double rooms for sole occupancy are also available for an additional £150 on the total holiday price.
Relais Fattoria is a centuries old manor house at the centre of a medieval hamlet known today as Castel Rigone. It's position, 650 metres above sea level, offers a breathtaking view of Lake Trasimeno.
The hotel has 4 differrent restaurants suited to different group sizes and functions. Rest assured that you'll be eating genuine and mouth-watering Umbrian gastronomy. Umbria is a land rich in gastronomic delights such as gourmet pastries, king truffles, mushrooms, and aromatic herbs. Most products come from the surrounding area.
All our excursions will be accompanied by a qualified, local, English speaking guide who will give us a commentary on what we see and of course they will always be happy to answer your questions.
A reasonable level of mobility is needed as we will be visiting some medieval towns, which will have steep cobbled streets. We will also be enjoying a boat ride. If anyone ever feels too tired, they can stop and rest and we will pick them up on the way back. Or perhaps some may simply elect to stay at the hotel for the day and just relax with a book.
On this tour to Tuscany and Umbria, we will be staying in a medieval village in a small family owned and managed hotel, which has a pool, the weather may be too cool to use the pool, but who knows?
On our first night we invite everyone for a pre-dinner glass of Prosecco - an ideal opportunity for everyone to get to know each other. During our evening meals, which tend to be three or four courses, everyone can enjoy two glasses of wine, either red or white as well as mineral water, both sparkling and natural.
Breakfast in hotel. In the morning you will discover the Lake Trasimeno area with a first visit to OASI LA VALLE. This is a natural protected park where many migrant birds stop during their long journey from North Africa to north Europe. The visit will last approximately 1h40’. Afterwards we will board a ferry from Passignano to the main island of the lake (Isola Maggiore) for a nice and easy walk (1,5km) for learning the secrets of this amazing place. Isola Maggiore is a peaceful place where you will enjoy the delicious food of cozy restaurants on the lake shores and the history of this place, a crossing between holy land and Bretagne. Dinner in hotel including 2 glasses of wine per person.

Today you will have a nice escape to ORVIETO, one of the most interesting and beautiful Italian towns thanks to its wonderful cathedral, the mystic alleys and the deep well of Saint Patrick. Orvieto is also a very old town that dates back to the Etruscan age and its Necropolis is still nowadays very beautiful and interesting for visitors. Meeting with the local English speaking guide to visit the cathedral, the fantastic chapel of San Brizio and the most beautiful corners of the city of the tuff cliff. Afternoon at leisure. It is also possible to arrange the visit to “Orvieto underground” an amazing itinerary in the underground secrets of the town (with guide). Dinner in hotel including 2 glasses of wine per person.
Breakfast and departure for a new experience, the visit of ASSISI, one of the most famous towns of Italy, protected by Unesco as world heritage thanks to the masterpieces of the Basilica of Saint Francis and because of the beauty of the old town itself! Assisi is the hometown of Saint Francis, the revolutionary monk of the middle age. Guided tour of main attractions of the town including upper and lower basilica where you will see also Giotto frescos. Tasting of local delicacies in a “Enoteca” including a glass of wine. Afternoon at your leisure. Dinner in hotel including 2 glasses of wine per person.

Breakfast. Transfer to PIENZA, that is charming little town in the Val d’Orcia Unesco protected site. The town has a fantastic view over the valley and a nice walk on the high street of Pienza will be a nice discovery; the pope palace and the cathedral are really one of a kind. Pienza is also famous as the pecorino cheese town. After having visited the town we will visit t a farm where pecorino is produced. Tasting of wine and cheese. In the afternoon back to the hotel. Dinner with 2 glasses of wine per person.
Breakfast. Transfer to MONTEPULCIANO. Montepulciano is a fantastic old Etruscan little Tuscan town perched on a steep hill in Tuscany. It has a nice international atmosphere and it is the best place for shopping. Here you will have plenty of shops for buying local food and delicacies, wine, jewels, hats and leather products. In Montepulciano we will visit one of the most beautiful and old wine cellars in Tuscany. Tasting of the famous Nobile Red Wine. Dinner in hotel including 2 glasses of wine per person.
